That’s bad luck, it is! All villages had their own specific ways for handling superstitions. There were often ceremonies/celebrations(Halloween), good luck charms(horseshoes over the door), and of course forbidden colors(for a long time, green was considered the color of the fae; and after that, red was considered the color of the devil in some places).

Some examples could be putting offerings of milk and food outside, throwing salt over your shoulder for good luck, always calling a ship a female, and so on.

Wife for Riches. Sometimes a marriage was more of a business deal than anything else. A man would get his pretty little wife, and in return the man would supply the wives family with riches(or in some cases, they would supply a kingdom with a peace treaty).

Wife for riches situations were far less common in small villages, however. That might have something to do with the fact that most were rarely making more than the other, so instead marriages of love were more common.

Trading a wife for riches was instead more common for the wealthy and the royalty, but to say it did not occasionally happen to the poorer folk as well would be an understatement.
